Professor Carles Sierra has been awarded the EurAI Distinguished Service Award 2025 for his sustained and high-impact contributions to Artificial Intelligence, particularly within the European AI community over nearly four decades.
He recently concluded his term as President of EurAI, having previously led the Catalan Association for Artificial Intelligence (ACIA). He was Local Chair for IJCAI-11 in Barcelona and General Chair of AAMAS-09 (Budapest) and Autonomous Agents 2000 (Barcelona). He has reviewed for the EC and multiple other European funding agencies. He has coordinated numerous international research efforts, including VALAWAI, a Horizon Europe project on Values in AI, the ALLIES MSCA-COFUND programme, and AIHUB-CSIC, a national network of over 400 AI researchers across 50 groups. Over his career, he has participated in and led multiple EU FET and FP projects, such as TAILOR, AI4EU, Humane-AI-Net, PRAISE, ACE, and LiquidPub. He has also made substantial contributions to the international AI community, notably as Programme Chair of IJCAI-17 and AAMAS 2004.
His technical contributions span knowledge representation, multi-agent systems, computational negotiation, value-sensitive design, explainability, and AI in education. He pioneered agent-mediated e-commerce through the FishMarket project and co-founded or supported AI startups, including Cognicor and wwwowww. He has received multiple awards for his research, including the ACM/SIGAI Autonomous Agents Research Award (2019) and the IFAAMAS Influential Paper Award (2023). He was elected a EurAI Fellow in 2005.
